We are a busy 5 partner PMS practice, list size 9500, in a deprived urban area. We work from purpose built modern premises, with 3 practice nurses and a health care assistant. Our attached district nurses work from the same building, enabling good communication and team work. We are one of the largest practices in Manchester with over 16,000 patients. We moved to a purpose built premise which has enabled us to start as a new training practice in August 2008.

Our patient base is diverse with a high turnover and a buoyant student population.

We usually train 2 STs and 2 FY2s at any one time.

The whole practice is involved in the process of doctor training, but the leads for STs are Peter Gill and Steve Tomkinson.

We offer a full range of NHS services and have visiting clinicians from CAT and Community Drugs Team, as well as visiting phlebotomy and close links with our local pharmacists.

Increasingly our chronic diseases are monitored by our excellent nursing team, and we have developed a successful in house Sexual Health Clinic and The Manchester Travel Clinic.

This is a busy practice in South Manchester with 10,400 patients from all social strata, located close to two teaching hospitals and with close links to the university. There are seven partners all with varied interests and expertise.

We have been teaching undergraduates since 1979 and postgraduates since 1991 with an extremely high membership pass rate. Three partners are GP trainers with experience in teaching registrars and SHOs who have their own consulting room and protected learning time for tutorials and general support. Emphasis is given to understanding the consultation and the practice is equipped with a digital video cameras and user friendly playback kit.

The practice is purpose built with teaching informing the design. Common rooms, library, operating theatre, conference room, eight ground floor consulting rooms, two second floor consulting rooms, two first floor treatment rooms with lift access and a separate administration area are all included. Foundation year teaching started in August 2006 with two F2s joining the practice.

The practice team and wider primary care team work well together with regular meetings, both formal and informal. The last year was the second of the New Contract and by dint of hard work we achieved 1050 on the QOF point system. The team also meets for RandR throughout the year and generally find these events therapeutic! We are supported by an excellent management and clerical team and there is a "good atmosphere" even when things seem to be going pear-shaped.

There are many opportunities for learning and gaining experience from all the team members. As well as General Medical Services the practice is involved in diabetes care, asthma management, child health surveillance, minor and intermediate surgery, community drug team work, in-house counselling, GP appraisals, Performing Arts medicine, undergraduate exams and interviews, antenatal, intra- and post-partum care, GP Commissioning and the Local Medical Committee.

Trainers: Bill Tamkin, Diane Layton, Chris Martin and Claudia Bool.

We have been a successful training practice since 1974, training not only GP registrars, but also medical and nursing students. All of our partners are fully involved in the training process. We endeavour to provide a high standard of evidenced based care and equip all our trainees with the skills they will require to practice independently. We have an excellent reputation in this area and strive to achieve this in a challenging yet supportive atmosphere.

We currently have four training grade doctors (two ST3s, one FY2 and one ST2). We have bi-monthly meetings, where guest speakers (including consultants) provide educational updates. We encourage and welcome enquiries from any prospective trainees.

Tregenna Group Practice

lynnzubby(at)nhs.net

Tregenna is a medium sized busy yet friendly practice with a list size of just under 7000, being a typical mixed urban type from quite a small geographical area.

The practice team is comprised of:

  • 4 Partners
  • 2 Practice Nurses and 1 Health Care Assistant
  • 1 Practice Manager and a Reception /Admin/Secretarial team of 9

Supported by an excellent Primary Health Care Team

We use INPS Vision software with integrated Appointment, Patient self check in and Patient call systems.

All patient records are fully summarized and computerized, making audit an easy and efficient process.

Like many practices we were until recently bursting at the seams. However the addition of a new extension last autumn has solved the problem and enabled us to embark on a new and exciting chapter and become a training practice.

Dr Hoi Shing Wong is the lead doctor for training in the practice, Dr Claire Hughes is also an experienced trainer. However all doctors in the practice are involved in teaching.

All the Partners have their own special interests and we believe that this will provide a supportive environment for our Registrars. We believe that training should be grounded on problem based learning and tailored to the needs of the Registrars. Personal interests are encouraged and there is ample opportunity for personal and career development.

Out of hours care is delivered through a co-operative (Mastercall formerly Stockport Doctors co-op).

All higher level targets are achieved and we continue to perform well against the opportunities presented by the new GMS contract.

We are a democratic Practice with many exciting ideas of how to change and improve the care we deliver to our patients. We are looking for an enthusiastic Registrar to deliver a high standard of professional and personal medical care. They must be friendly and have a sense of humour with the ability to promote an enjoyable working atmosphere. They need to be able to participate in the development of our Practice, in this ever-changing new NHS.

In summary we are a friendly, approachable practice committed to training. We aim to support the registrar through all the challenges of the training year to become a well balanced, independent practitioner. Please feel free to contact us or come and see what we do before making your choice of training practice.
